Welcome to Beit Shalom Congregation of Austin. A Messianic congregation in Austin, Texas encouraging Jewish and Christian believers in Yeshua to keep the Sabbath, moadim (appointed times), and the Torah.
"Messianic Judaism" is the term used to define a system of belief and practice embraced by Jewish and non-Jewish people who believe in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus). Messianic Jews maintain a lifestyle and form of worship that identifies them with Jewish customs and traditions while believing that Yeshua (Jesus) of Nazareth is the promised Messiah of the Jewish Scriptures. Messianic Judaism is part of the universal Body of Messiah, but Messianic believers claim the right to express themselves in a way that identifies with Jewish heritage and with the original Jewish context of belief in Yeshua. Messianic Jews generally celebrate biblical holidays like Pesach (Passover), Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles), Shavuot (Pentecost), the Sabbath, and other appointed times commanded in the Torah. Forms of observance vary widely between groups, families, and individuals, as no one is bound or obligated to follow any particular minhag (custom). All are free to celebrate according to their own preference; there are no officially sanctioned rules, doctrines, or models of messianic observance. Since Beit Shalom has established a congregation in Austin, Texas, for our worship, we are fashioned after the early church of the New Testament. Our congregation can be identified by certain characteristics: meeting on the Sabbath, worshipping God through Davidic/Israeli music and dance, praying from a traditional Jewish siddur (prayer book), reciting blessings over congregants, wearing tallit (prayer shawl) and head coverings (a kippah for men and head-wraps for women), observing strict dietary laws (Torah kosher), circumcision, and many other Jewish traditions consistent with biblical commandments.
Our MissionBeit Shalom means "House of Peace." Beit Shalom is an Austin, Texas based congregation founded upon a family-centered community of believers in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) who are "fellow citizens" (Ephesians 2:19) together grafted in to the "commonwealth of Israel," (Ephesians 2:12) "brought near by the blood of Messiah" (Ephesians 2:13). We believe that all of Scripture--the Hebrew Scriptures and Apostolic writings (commonly known as Old and New Testaments), is inspired by God and relevant to the disciples of Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel.
